Lillian’s Story
Something to Sing About

How Early Orthodontic Care Helps Kids Grow Confidently
Meet Lillian. She’s bright, expressive, and loves to sing. So when her Phase One Interceptive Orthodontic journey began at Swihart Orthodontics, she wasn’t about to let anything stop her from doing what she loves - not even a Bluegrass Appliance.
What’s a Bluegrass Appliance, and Why It Matters
Lillian’s treatment is part of what’s called Phase One orthodontics, or interceptive treatment, which helps guide children’s growth and prevent more complex issues later. In Lillian’s case, she had a habit of pushing or “thrusting” her tongue forward against the teeth instead of resting behind them.
While it might sound harmless, tongue thrusting can cause teeth to shift or prevent them from coming in properly. The Bluegrass Appliance is a device that rests on the roof of the mouth and uses a spinning bead to guide the tongue into the right position; a gentle reminder that helps the patient’s bite and smile grow strong.
