Phase 1 Interceptive Orthodontics

Book New Consult

At Swihart Orthodontics, we offer Phase 1 Interceptive orthodontic treatment — early intervention that guides proper jaw and tooth alignment before all permanent teeth emerge. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children visit an orthodontist around age 7 to identify and address developing issues like jaw misalignment, crowding, or spacing early.

What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics and What Does It Involve?

Phase 1 orthodontics focuses on creating the right environment for permanent teeth to grow in properly. Treatment often includes an expander and sometimes a metal braces to help guide the development of the jaws and teeth.

Some Phase 1 treatments focus on guiding jaw and tooth growth, while others address oral habits that can affect bite development. The Bluegrass appliance, for example, helps correct tongue thrusting in young children, supporting proper alignment and function. Learn more about how The Bluegrass appliance works and its benefits.

Most Phase 1 treatments last about 10 to 12 months, depending on your child’s orthodontic needs. After this phase, we monitor progress and plan for Phase 2 (metal braces or clear aligner treatment), if needed, once all permanent teeth have erupted.

What Is an Expander?

An expander is an orthodontic appliance designed to guide upper jaw development for improved alignment, function, and appearance. In cases where the upper and lower jaws don’t align ideally, sometimes called a crossbite, an expander helps achieve a more balanced relationship and allows teeth to position optimally.

The expander is attached to the upper teeth and activated at home – small turns performed by a parent or guardian each day. This gentle process gradually widens the upper jaw, helping the top and bottom teeth fit together in optimal alignment and setting the stage for a healthy bite and smile.

Why Early Orthodontic Visits Matter

Even if your child doesn’t need treatment right away, early checkups allow Dr. Swihart and her team to track growth and spot potential issues early, such as jaw misalignment, crowding, or spacing problems. Addressing these concerns early can make future orthodontic treatment shorter, simpler, and more comfortable.

We recommend yearly orthodontic checkups to monitor jaw development, alignment, and overall growth.
